Chevy Silverado 2500HD
Diesel Pickup Truck
The Silverado 2500HD is Chevy's basic diesel work truck but
it has been winning some rave reviews. One of the major auto
magazines named it the "Truck of the Year for 2011."
The 2500HD does seem to provide everything that you would
want in a pickup truck including plenty of power.
The Duramax 6.6 liter turbo diesel in the 2500HD delivers
11-percent more fuel efficiency and 17,800 pounds or 4.6 tons
of towing power. The Silverado gets 13.5 miles per gallon
which is decent for a pickup truck.
The Duramax can also burn B20 Biodiesel fuel which is composed
of 20-percent biodiesel and 80-percent regular diesel. That
makes the 2500HD one of the greenest trucks on the block.
Yet it can produce 397 horsepower and 765 pounds of torque.
In addition to improved engine and fuel performance the 2500HD
has a new six speed Allison transmission. The improved transmission
has a stronger torque converter, a larger output shaft and
more durable clutches. This makes the Silverado 2500HD an
ideal pickup for the farm or the construction site.
Sturdier Redesigned Body
It is easy to see why many enthusiasts like the Silverado
2500HD. Chevy has completed redesigned it and come out with
a tougher and sturdier body designed to take a lot of abuse.
The fully-boxed steel frame is five stronger than previous
models. That enables it to haul up to 4,192 pounds in the
GM's engineers also added bigger components to the Silverado
to make it more rugged. This includes a rear suspension that
is 20-percent wider and a new independent suspension that
is supposed to let each wheel react to rough terrain. That
would make for a smoother ride.
A High Tech Work Truck
Even though it is a work truck, the Silverado 2500HD does
accommodate a lot of the latest technology. Optional electronics
includes Chevrolet WiFi by AutoNet mobile that can turn the
2500HD into a hot spot on wheels. That means workers can connect
to the office via their laptops while at the worksite.
Three different navigation systems are available for the
2500HD. These include Chevy's proprietary OnStar turn by turn
navigation system which also includes emergency communications,
a touch screen navigation radio that can also double as a
CD and DVD player, and XM NavTraffic that includes live traffic
information as well as navigation.
Some other features include a new exhaust break system, trailer
sway control, Hill start assist, auto grade braking, intelligent
brake assist, an integrated brake controller that means a
driver can control a trailer's brakes from the 2500HD.
Also standard is the StabilTrack Electronic Stability Control
system which provides for a smooth ride. A trailer sway control
system enables the Stability Control to control the trailer
operations. The exhaust breaking system actually uses the
power of the turbo diesel to slow the 2500HD which provides
for better braking and less wear and tear on the brakes.
The Silverado 2500HD is one impressive diesel pickup truck.
It looks like it will be the standard for the next generation
of work trucks. It is also big so it might not be a good city
driving vehicle. Persons that need a heavy-duty work truck
should definitely take a look at it. As can be expected several
special versions are available as well. The Chevy
Silverado 3500HD is the larger version which has a bit
more power than the 2500HD.
